The Garden of Hidden Surprise provides peaceful reflection for Hultman Studio. The garden was first established in 2009 with plantings of azalea, boxwood, and japanese maples. Rocks and moss were added in 2011. In 2020, master garden designer Shin Abe developed and installed a new garden architecture with substantially enhanced rock compositions. New elevated berms were also added and expanded over subsequent years and moss was cultivated on these. A gravel feature serves as a functional ephemeral stream during times of heavy rain, and provides a dry stream motif at other times. The above composition provides the main mass and focal point of the garden. It consists of 14 rocks in the vertex of the garden, which is laid out in a triangular shape. Two other rock compositions (not shown) complete the garden.
